Quick Picks – Week 35, 2013 – featuring tips for tight wedding budgets, suspended ships & chocolate shops.

Quick Picks

Here’s this week’s quick pick of internet finds. As usual, good things come in threes…

Weddings

There’s no denying that weddings can be expensive. So this week’s wedding quick picks are all about saving money.

The Knot Australia has 30 ways to save money on your wedding.

Polka Dot Bride has some great tips on making your budget for flowers go further.

Offbeat Bride has a cost-saving suggestion for those of you who are competitive sporty types. Why not use your race numbers as table numbers?

Art & Design

There is something truly brilliant about oversized things. Over the course of his career US Artist, Robert Therrien has produced a series of sculptures of enlarged household goods scaled up to three and a half times their normal size. His works include tables, chairs, and stacks of vintage restaurant plates.

The Royal Museums in Greenwich, England have done a wonderful thing with their restoration of the last surviving tea clipper ship, the Cutty Sark. The ship is mounted in a way that makes it appear to be sailing through the pavement. You can go on board and even have a cup of tea in the cafe that sits underneath the suspended ship.

Anatomy lecturer Dr Claudia Diaz, who is based at RMIT in Melbourne, lets her students combine art with science by turning a willing volunteer into a living depiction of anatomical man. Note: This link will take you to a YouTube video that will play automatically.

Random Asides

I’ve been doing some research into the history of our quirky old building, and have come across the geeky wonder that is the National Library of Australia’s Trove. It’s a searchable database of over 300 million books, images, newspapers, maps and more. Many of which are online. Needless to say, I am in history geek heaven.

The Brisbane Writer’s Festival starts on Tuesday. There will be lectures, public readings, workshops and lots of other fun writing related stuff, some of which is free. It runs until 9 September 2013.

I’ve just found out that we have a new chocolate shop in Brisbane. Couverture & Co. opened its doors on Enoggera Terrace in Red Hill on 17 August. Now if only we still lived around the corner…

That’s it for another week’s quick picks. Have a great weekend!
