A week ago we were lucky enough to meet the beautiful singer-songwriter Layla Klinkert at the Glory Box Relief on the Runway fashion show. Soft light and my love for darker pictures made for an opportunity too good to miss! ~ Geoff

Little Details

Little Details

Posted by Pav Matt on May 7, 2013 in Projects

It’s amazing how much attention is given to the little details that make up a wedding. I adore the incorporation of feathers into this bridal bouquet by Lilyvale Flowers to make it just a little bit different. This picture is another in the series from our recent styled shoot – a classic garden wedding. ~ […]

Let’s pretend

Let’s pretend

Posted by Pav Matt on April 30, 2013 in People

As wedding photographers we get the pleasure of recording the wonderful visions that our couples have for their wedding days. But sometimes it’s fun to make your own vision come to life, which is why styled or inspiration shoots (i.e. pretend weddings) can be so much fun. And it’s why one glorious day in April […]

A new name

Posted by Pav Matt on April 24, 2013 in news

Exciting news! We’re changing our name! Over the next week or so you’ll see us move from Photographs by Pavlina Matt to Shy Fox Photography in the various places we occupy on the web. There will be no changes in what we do or how we do it, we’ll just have far prettier branding. Hopefully […]

There’s a magical point in a photo shoot when it transforms from people standing in front of a camera to people playing for the camera. ~ Pav

Quiet Moments

Posted by Pav Matt on April 16, 2013 in People

I really love pictures that seem to capture a stolen moment. One of those points in time when it seems as though the people in the picture are in a world of their own, away from distractions like pesky photographers. ~ Pav P.S. Aren’t her trousers fabulous!

Together

Posted by Pav Matt on April 9, 2013 in People

The photos we’ve posted so far this year have been focused on gorgeous girls (and the occasional drain cover), so we thought it was time to add a bit of romance by featuring a lovely couple. And what better way to start than with this one. ~ Pav

Autumn Bunny

Autumn Bunny

Posted by Pav Matt on March 26, 2013 in People

It’s a few days before Easter and the shops are full of representations of bunnies and baby chickens, reminders that it’s spring in the northern hemisphere. Meanwhile, in this part of the world we’re heading into my favourite time of year. So my Easter bunny is an autumn bunny. She’s much more grown-up and savvy […]

Blocks and Sparkles

Posted by Pav Matt on March 12, 2013 in People

Cities provide great little hidden pockets in which to shoot. It’s why you’ll often find me wandering the city streets with a camera, staring at walls and down alleyways that other people are just walking past. The hard bit is keeping them all catalogued in your head so that you can use them at the […]

Fragments

Fragments

Posted by Pav Matt on March 5, 2013 in People

When we think of a portrait we often think of a picture which shows the subject’s face pointing roughly in the direction of the camera. It might be part of a full length shot, or a close up of their head and shoulders. Is a picture really a portrait if you can’t see the subject’s […]

Waiting

Waiting

Last week I shared a picture of one of my favourite props – a pair of sparkly bunny ears. This week you get to see them in action. As I said last week, props can easily change the whole feeling of a picture. A wedding includes lots of props – the pretty dress, the bouquet, the […]

A pair of sparkly bunny ears

A pair of sparkly bunny ears

I love shoots that involve fun props, be they giant red balloons or sparkly bunny ears. Props add a touch of theatre and can change the whole feeling of a picture. As far as I’m concerned, the more fun the prop the better. If nothing else, it lightens the mood and makes the whole process […]

The art of make-up

The art of make-up

I’m not a girl who wears a lot of make-up. In fact, I’m the kind of girl who puts on lipstick in the morning, promptly forgets about it, and has it all wear off by mid-morning. Maybe it’s because I have no skill whatsoever with applying it properly. I can’t be trusted with marker pens, […]

Balance

Balance

Posted by Pav Matt on February 5, 2013 in People

It can be funny how sometimes you don’t fully take into account the little details when planning a shot. Like the fact that maintaining your balance on the shifting sands of an incoming tide can be tricky, even for a highly talented Body Balance Instructor like the gorgeous Lou from Relaxed Soul, Happy Mind. I […]

Some more Footpath Art

Some more Footpath Art

Last week I explained why I take photos of drain covers, and why that makes Japan so interesting for me. Today is our last day in Japan, so I thought I’d share another photo that I’ve added to my collection. This was taken on one of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea, which we […]

Quick Picks – Week 4, 2013

Footpath Art

Footpath Art

We’re on holiday in Japan this week, so this week’s photo post is from one of my personal projects. While it may seem strange that I have a personal project which includes drain covers, I can explain. My interest is in what I describe as footpath art, the art we walk over every day, often […]

A Red Balloon

A Red Balloon

Posted by Pav Matt on January 14, 2013 in People

What could be more relaxing than standing on a calm, empty beach, looking out to sea while holding a giant red balloon? As is so often the case, all is not quite as it seems. Rather than being on a quiet empty beach in the middle of nowhere we were surrounded by early morning walkers, […]

A New Approach

Posted by Pav Matt on January 12, 2013 in news

The start of a new year is a great time to review what’s gone before, to make changes and to plot a course for the year ahead. This year, as part of that process my website got a shiny makeover, which included a new look for this blog. The new look has prompted me to […]

A prayer

I’m one of those people who has always loved to roam around cemeteries, reading inscriptions on headstones, and admiring the amazing sculptures that grace so many of the graves. This beautiful angel is in Toowong Cemetery. Pav

Inspiring Work – The Ballerina Project

Photographer Dane Shitagi has been taking the photographs that make up the Ballerina Project for the last 12 years. He takes dancers who are currently dancing or have danced for major companies and photographs them away from their ballet studios, in parks, on beaches and in urban environments, and the results are beautiful. You can check […]

What a beautiful day

Posted by Pav Matt on January 6, 2013 in Places

In the words of the Levellers… “What a beautiful day, I’m the king of all time, And nothing is impossible, In my all powerful mind.” How could I not feel inspired waking up to this amazing view? Go listen to the song, you’ll be humming it for days. 🙂 Pav

Our first weekend beach escape for the year

This photo was taken at Nobby Beach. I haven’t been to this part of the coast for years, but it’s the beach that we always came to when I was growing up so it holds a special place in my heart. While I love our place in New Farm, I think I could happily relocate […]

Zebra glass

I spent most of today at my desk setting up the new look on my website (I’m so pleased with it!). A one stage I glanced down and noticed that the sun coming through my window was hitting my zebra paperweight just perfectly. It’s amazing the effect the right lighting can have. ~ Pav

Adding a bit of sparkle to my life

I’ve started 2013 with a touch of sparkle. I’ve been having fun with some crafty creations that I’m planning to use in an upcoming shoot. I’m quite particular about my crafting style, so it’s meant stitching lots and lots of sequins on one by one. Still, the finished product is something to behold. Are you […]

Melbourne

I have a very dear friend who’s planning to move interstate soon. She seems to be happily immersing herself in images related to her soon to be new home, so I thought I’d contribute.

Happy New Year!

We hope you had a fabulous night and that your year ahead is filled with fun and adventure. I know ours will be!

Farewell to 2012

Farewell to 2012

It’s been a busy year this year, filled with new adventures and more than a few rediscovered pleasures. We’ve travelled overseas and within Australia. We’ve acquired a range of exciting new toys. And, as always, we’ve had a lot of fun together. These are just some of the things that stand out when I look […]

Holiday Fun

Holiday Fun

It’s been far too long since we’ve been to the beach, so today we remedied that. It was a gorgeous day, with the kind of weather that makes South-East Queensland such a lovely place to live.  We folded down the roof on our little Fiat and soaked up the sunshine as we drove north to […]

New Toy

After the usual amount of research and careful weighing up of all the options, Geoff has a shiny new toy. It’s our most exciting post-Christmas sales purchase.

I’ve been baking a lot lately

When we moved into our tiny New Farm apartment I got rid of a lot of my baking stuff, assuming (rightly) that I would be buying fabulous locally produced things rather than making them myself. But recently I’ve started to get back into it, making biscuits and slices for Geoff to snack on. Today I […]

Just 4 sleeps until Christmas

I’ve embraced the Christmas spirit this year, and am still adding to the Christmas sparkle around our place. A few days ago I happily discovered that decorations get heavily discounted this close to Christmas, so I stocked up on a few shiny baubles to go with all of our felty creations. It’s funny, despite the […]

More Christmas Craft

I did tell you that I was likely to share more of my Christmas craft adventures. Here are my felty Christmas pudding and holly. Aren’t they cute! Christmas is one of the few times of year I get quite nostalgic about living in England. There’s something so lovely about a cold Christmas, with real holly […]

Homemade Felty Christmas Tree

What do you do when you want a Christmas Tree that will fit in a small apartment and you can’t find one you like in the shops? You make one, of course. We started with a trip to Lincraft to purchase a polystyrene core, several sheets of felt in slightly different shades of green, flat […]

Fallen

At times the lead up to Christmas can seem a little frenzied. There’s the rush to get things done before the end of the year, the pressure of finding perfect presents for the special people in your life, and the flurry of end-of-year gatherings. In amongst all this, it can be nice to take a […]

Highlights of the weekend

Highlights of our weekend: * Coffee and croissants at Reverends on Brunswick Street. * New shoes. I’m rediscovering Nike in my quest to find shoes that I can spend all day in. * A visit to The Tea Centre resulting in the purchase of a new teapot from The London Pottery Company. * Shopping in […]

Happy Birthday to Me

I had a wonderful day filled with good friends, lovely food and beautiful new shiny things.

More stormy weather

Tonight’s weather made for another spectacular show in the skies over Brisbane.

Stormy weather

Brisbane was hit by a series of amazing storms today – strong winds, heavy rain, lightning and thunder, the works. We were out and about when the first one struck.

Solar eclipse

I watched today’s solar eclipse the old-fashioned way – with a homemade pinhole viewer.

Today has been a perfect spring day in Brisbane

I’ve always loved the colour of the sky here. At times it has an intensity that doesn’t look real.

Chocolates from Paris

There was a second layer, but it obviously disappeared pretty quickly…

The perfect end to a weekend of adventure.

This weekend we decided to treat ourselves to a long, long weekend at the coast. We filled it with adventures – spotting the cute creatures at a wildlife sanctuary, visiting a regional art gallery, sailing, kayaking, and snorkelling. Then we finished it off with an amazingly indulgent morning of relaxation at Enrich Retreat and Day […]

Time for a snooze

A koala at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary doing what koalas do best.

Drops

The rain provides some interesting opportunities to have a bit of fun with the camera.

All the pretty colours.

A few highlights from last night’s Riverfire. It would have been more fun if I hadn’t locked myself out of the house while taking photos. 🙂

Morning Stretch

This piece is by Dawn Conn of Ruby and Iris, an artist I’ve mentioned before. I loved her work so much from the first time I saw it that I knew it was only a matter of time before I ended up owning a piece for myself.

Featured Supplier.

Posted by Pav Matt on September 25, 2012 in news

Exciting news! I’m a featured supplier in The Knot Australia’s weekly news update. The Knot are a great resource if you’re planning your wedding. They have information on pretty much everything to do with weddings – dresses, planning tools, ideas, inspiration, photos, and of course wedding vendors. Although obviously you’ve already got your photographer sorted… They also have a […]

Spring has arrived

The flowers in New Farm Park are in bloom which means that part of my run is beautifully rose scented.

New Running Shoes!

These are so pretty that I’m sure they’ll inspire me to run faster and further.

Kick starting the weekend

There’s nothing like training in a beautiful location with a good friend to kick start your weekend.

Brisbane Running Festival

It was a beautiful morning for a run. The sky was clear, the air was cool and crisp. The result was a great run with a faster time than I expected.

Oooh, shiny!

Have I mentioned my love of shiny things?

Bunnies!

During a scouting trip to the location for an upcoming wedding we discovered a bonus feature of the resort – live bunnies trimming the lawns. I’m interested to see whether they appear during the ceremony!

The joys of freshly baked scones.

It’s amazing how much mess I can generate when given the opportunity to play with flour. The result was worth it though. Pumpkin scones are an old favourite of mine and I love making my own. They’re especially lovely made with pumpkin fresh from my parents’ garden.

Look up.

I’m forever being amazed by the things I can walk past every day and not notice. I didn’t realise there were so many gems hidden in plain sight in the Queen Street Mall. All I had to do was look up.

Escape to the beach.

I love our weekend escapes to the beach. Running along the foreshore makes me appreciate just how beautiful the place I’ve chosen to call home is.

Now this is what a winter’s day in Brisbane should look like!

Beautiful blue sky, a light smattering of clouds, and the sunshine sparkling off the river. This was taken during my lunchtime run, and yes, I am feeling virtuous!

Kitsune.

The kitsune (fox) statues at Inari Shrines remain some of my favourite things in Japan. This one is at the Jorinji Shrine in Matsumoto. Worshippers often place hats and/or bibs on the statues as a sign of respect.

Quiet times.

Matsumoto is proving to be the perfect place to slow things down, relax and unwind a little after the bright lights and near constant bustle of Osaka.

His and Hers.

Street style in Matsumoto, Japan. So cute!

At night central Osaka is all about coloured lights, be it in art or advertising.

These lights are part of an art installation using recycled materials. They’re largely made from recycled plastic shopping bags.

Sweetness and Light in Umeda.

Yesterday was a day of shopping. The overwhelming range in Yodobashi Camera – if only I could fit it all in my suitcase. The lovely, girly fashions in the shop windows of Umeda. And finally, the bright, bright lights of Japan by night.
